Apple is unlikely to release any iPhone model with under-display Touch ID in the next two years, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a tweet a few days ago. In a September 2021 research note, Kuo had predicted that Apple would launch at least one new iPhone model with an under-display fingerprint scanner in the second half of 2023, but his recent tweet suggests that this is unlikely to happen again. “I previously predicted iPhone would support under-display fingerprint sensing/Touch ID as early as 2023,” Kuo tweeted. Kuo said, based on a recent survey showing the new iPhones in 2023 & 2024 may not adopt Touch ID under the screen. Face ID with mask on iPhone is already a viable biometric solution.
Apple did test an under-display fingerprint scanner for at least some iPhone 13 models, according to reports from Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal and Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, but Apple has apparently decided against the idea. Under-display Touch ID will come in handy when Face ID doesn't work with masks, but iOS 15.4 introduces a new “Face ID with Mask” feature on iPhone 12 and newer models. An argument could still be made that having Face ID and Touch ID under the display on the iPhone would give customers the best of both worlds, but Kuo's tweet suggests that won't be the case for a few years.
There's still a chance that Apple may introduce an iPhone with Touch ID built into the power button, in line with the latest iPad Air and iPad mini models, but there's no word yet to suggest that Apple plans to bring one any time soon.
